The Wonderful Wildlife of Bassenthwaite

Just a 10-minute drive away from the centre of the lovely town of Keswick, lies the Lake District Wildlife Park. This rural zoo compromises of 24 acres of parkland that is home to over 100 species of birds, mammals and reptiles! Here at Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa, we feel very lucky to be so close to animals that are native to us in this area of the UK, but also to animals from further afield!

Watch Bengal Eagle Owls and Harris Hawks soar through the sky, with the majestic Skiddaw Mountain as their backdrop. Meet the Meerkats and hang with a group of Ring-tailed Lemurs with one of our Lake District Wildlife Park experiences. See the Burmese Python and the Cuban Boa slither through the Cumbrian grass! The range of animals here in the valley really is astounding – the Wildlife Park is an absolute must-see when you come to stay at Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa.

Did you know that you could adopt some of the wildlife in the Lake District Wildlife Park? The Park gives you the chance to adopt one of their animals. Choose from adopting a Red Panda, Grants Zebra, Asian Short Clawed Otter and many more fascinating species. You can purchase an animal adoption gift card for only £40.00 on their website.

The Lake District Wildlife Park holds the conservation of endangered species very close to its heart. The Northern Eurasian Lynx was once indigenous to Cumbria around 300 years ago, but now the only place you are able to see this feline beast is in the Wildlife Park! The team at the park currently take part in six endangered species programmes to help the wildlife in the North Lakes continue to thrive.

As well as those species who reside in the Lake District Wildlife Park, the valley of Bassenthwaite is home to many species that are native to the Lake District and the UK as a whole. In recent months, we have seen the return of the Ospreys to Lake Bassenthwaite. This pair of breeding Ospreys have become celebrities of some sort around Bassenthwaite and the wider Lake District – ramblers and guests at Armathwaite Hall often see them swooping down over the lake to catch fish to take back for their brood. We always look forward to the return of these magnificent birds each year!

Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa is the perfect base from which to explore the diverse wildlife of the North Lakes and see some of these marvellous creatures for yourself in a variety of natural habitats – book your Lake District break now.
