 The Ultimate Menopause-Friendly Spa Day

Pre, peri and post-menopause can create difficult symptoms for women. From night sweats to brain fog, menopause has both physical and mental effects on our bodies.

One great way to get some relief from your menopausal symptoms is to indulge in a spa day. Taking time away for yourself to relax and rest can help to soothe your physical symptoms and refresh your mind.

Did you know that we have dedicated treatments to relieve menopausal symptoms? Read on to find out more about these tailored treatments and how you can make the most of a menopause-relieving spa day!

What is menopause?

Women who have experienced periods will go through menopause, which is when periods stop due to dropping hormone levels. Menopause can also be triggered by surgeries that remove the ovaries (oophorectomy) or the uterus (hysterectomy), as well as treatments like chemotherapy.

When does menopause start?

Generally, menopause will start between the ages of 45 and 55 – but for some, it may be earlier or later in life. Perimenopause comes first and is the time when periods become irregular. Menopause is diagnosed when you have not had a period in 12 months.

How long does menopause last?

On average, it lasts for seven years, but some women can experience it for up to 14 years.

Menopause symptoms

Menopausal symptoms can be challenging to experience; 62% of women say their experience is “difficult” or “very difficult”; some even define it as a “nightmare”. Common symptoms can include:

  • mood changes, such as low mood, depression, mood swings and anxiety
  • brain fog – difficulty concentrating or remembering things
  • hot flushes, which can happen anytime but are especially common at night
  • sleep problems, which can sometimes be caused by night sweats and intense mood changes
  • intense headaches or migraines
  • muscle and joint pain
  • weight gain and changes in body composition
  • a change in your skin – dry, itchy skin is common during menopause
  • lower sex drive, pain during sex and vaginal pain or dryness
  • recurring UTIs.

It is no wonder many women find menopause difficult to experience!

Here, we will cover how you can relieve many of these symptoms with a rejuvenating spa day.

Menopause spa day benefits

A spa day, particularly one that is tailored to your needs and menopausal symptoms, can benefit both your body and mind. It is well established that self-care routines in the form of spa days can boost our mental health, while treatments and using facilities like our outdoor hot tub, steam rooms or pool can relieve physical pain and discomfort.

Plus, our haven of tranquillity is set in a gorgeous pocket of the Lake District, offering breathtaking natural scenery – which is proven to boost your mood!

Relieve physical symptoms

A lot of the physical symptoms of menopause leave us in pain or discomfort.

Some symptoms can last after your periods have stopped for at least 12 months (post-menopause).

Your Best You | Menopause spa treatment

In partnership with Temple Spa, we offer menopause-specific Your Best You treatment. This bespoke therapy treats your specific symptoms, calming both your body and your mind.

Depending on whether you are experiencing hot flushes, you can choose from a warm or cooling massage. Your therapist will work on any areas of your body where you are experiencing a lot of tension, pain or aching. We use Himalayan salts stones combined with the finest Temple Spa skincare ingredients to leave you feeling soothed and your skin soft.

Our rhythmic stretching and joint rotation routines will further ease any pain or discomfort you are experiencing. Finally, you will receive a lymphatic draining facial massage to eliminate any puffiness in the face caused by menopause, leaving you feeling fresh and gorgeous.

We combine this with a healing stones ritual; the stones produce negative ions that will provide you with stress relief, increase your energy and boost your mood. The Your Best You routine truly leaves your body and mind feeling ultra-relaxed.

Finish with a bio-cellulose eye mask to leave your eye area hydrated, brightened and youthful and reduce any puffiness caused by menopause.

Body scrubs, wraps and infusions

We offer a range of body treatments that go beyond the traditional massage and offer many benefits to your skin. Our Organic Seaweed Leaf Wrap, in partnership with organic beauty specialist VOYA, provides a detoxifying, firming and exfoliating treatment to the body. This is the perfect treatment for those experiencing the drying, inflaming effects of menopause in their skin.

If you love a warming treatment, our Temple Spa Glorious Mud wrap will cocoon you in a wrap of cosiness with similarly detoxifying properties, combined with a soothing face and scalp massage.

Reflexology to reduce hot flushes and pain

Hot flushes are a persistent symptom of menopause – and in addition to relieving them with specially tailored cooling treatments, we can also address them with reflexology.

This therapy is well-known for addressing pain in the body via pressure points, but it is a well-kept secret that addressing certain pressure points can significantly reduce hot flushes too!

Swimming and yoga for gentle pain relief

Gentle exercise can offer relief from many of the physical symptoms of menopause, from muscle and joint pain to headaches, plus it can limit any excess weight gain.

Swimming is well-known for being kind to our joints – so if you are experiencing joint pain that makes exercise difficult, swimming and water aerobics are the perfect solution – and they are so much fun!

Yoga can also help to relieve aches and pains and naturally stretch out our muscles and joints – it is ideal if you find yourself hunched over or cramped up as a result of menopausal pain!

Relieve mental strain

Menopause can have a major impact on our mental wellbeing. Due to the fluctuation on our hormones, we may experience low mood or even new mood swings. But there are many ways taking time away in a spa can help to boost your mental wellbeing.

FAQs

How to treat dry skin after menopause
One of the most common skin complaints caused by menopause is dry, itchy and tight skin.

Prioritising hydration and moisturisation (yes, they are two different things!) in your at-home skincare routine is essential. Hydrate and strengthen with serums and inject some moisture into your face with a rich face cream or moisturiser. Both VOYA and Temple Spa offer effective skincare treatments that can banish dry skin – just ask at the spa for our recommendations!

For an added boost, book the VOYA Anti-Ageing Restorative Facial – organic ingredients,
antioxidant algae and a restorative blend of botanicals help stimulate collagen production for plumper, smoother, more hydrated skin. VOYA’s trademark organic seaweed also supports healthy skin.
How to treat menopause acne
Is there anything more frustrating than getting acne again as you mature? But menopause can also bring on those pesky pustules because of fluctuating hormones – the culprit of our much-maligned teen acne.

We recommend the Made for Life Soothe and Nurture Organic Facial – as well as providing softening barrier support, this facial will also reduce congestion and re-balance your skin.

Our innovative All About the Glow facial can also help to treat dark spots and leftover acne marks by brightening the skin and encouraging cell turnover. It is the perfect treatment if you are over the worst of your menopausal acne!

Find out more about these treatments in our spa treatment brochure . Please note that severe and inflammatory acne should be treated by a doctor or dermatologist.
How to treat menopause insomnia
Insomnia can disrupt our lives in so many ways. In fact, research has shown that a lack of sleep impairs us in a similar way to alcohol! We recommend speaking to your doctor if you are experiencing insomnia, but we do have some tips that can improve your sleep quality:

• The Your Best You treatment is designed to relieve anxiety, which can improve the quality of your sleep.
• Our Made for Life Wellness Touch Therapy treatments are proven to be nurturing, calming and relaxing – the perfect trifecta for a good night’s sleep.
• Keeping your bedtime and waking times regular can help keep your body clock balanced.
• Avoid drinking caffeine for 10 hours before you go to bed – that is how long it takes to clear out of your bloodstream!
• Don’t exercise within three hours of going to sleep – if you want to take advantage of our incredible gym facilities and fitness classes , make sure you do it at least three hours before bedtime!
• Consider journalling or writing down your worries before bed – this takes them off your mind, allowing you to drift into a peaceful slumber!
How to treat menopause joint pain
Our Your Best You treatment specifically addresses joint pain caused by menopause.

Additionally, you can find some relief for joint pain when exercising by trying out gentle swimming or water aerobics in our 16-metre infinity-edge pool!

Our steam room and sauna can also relieve joint pain, so why not pay them a visit once you’ve had a dip in the pool?
How to treat menopause back pain
There are a few ways you can address back pain caused by menopause. Gentle massages can help – our Drift Away full-body massage relaxes tense and sore muscles.

If you work at a desk, remember to get up regularly and switch positions throughout the day – staying seated in the same position for too long can worsen menopausal back pain.

Exercising is another way to limit pain, because regular movement is associated with healthier bones, joints and muscles. Weight training is also a great option both before, during and after menopause. Weight training in your 30s helps you build bone strength, which can reduce some of the pain associated with menopause.

If you find that your joint pain prevents you from doing exercises like weight training, consider how you can build movement into your day-to-day activities. Whether you choose to park further away from the grocery store (or get off the bus a stop earlier) so you can walk a bit more, take the stairs instead of the lift whenever you can or do more chores, like laundry folding, standing up, all of these small movements can build up to make a big difference.

If you find your pain is debilitating, particularly in your lower back, we recommend speaking to your doctor.
How to treat menopause body odour
Noticed that you are sweating more during menopause – or that your sweat smells worse? This is another common side-effect – as well as hot flushes causing excess sweating, the reduction in oestrogen can also leave our sweat smellier because there is more testosterone in our bodies.

Believe it or not, regular exercise can cut down on excess sweating by regulating your body temperature, meaning you may sweat less in the long run. Depending on your abilities, you can try swimming, a fitness class or a soothing yoga class. Yoga is especially beneficial to women going through menopause because it stimulates the glands responsible for regulating your hormones – win-win!

Be sure to shower or bathe straight after exercise to get rid of the sweat and bacteria on your skin.

Using an anti-perspirant is essential if you are sweating or smelling more – a standard sweet-scented deodorant may no longer cut it! Anti-perspirants work by blocking the sweat glands, whereas standard deodorants use fragrance to mask odour.
How to stop menopause night sweats
Night sweats are one of the most common complaints of menopause. Sleeping with a fan on or a window open are common ways to keep cool during the night, but there are other methods you can try too – and if you sleep with a partner, these options are likely to be less disruptive.

Make sure your sheets, pillow and duvet covers are made of a cooling material – silk, satin and pure cotton are high-quality materials that will not cause you to overheat, but they are not cold enough to affect your partner. In addition, you could also use a cooling gel insert in your pillow. Keep a bottle of cold, insulated water to drink if you wake up hot through the night.

Certain foods and drinks make us more prone to sweating, so it is a good idea to limit them before you go to bed. These include:

• alcohol and caffeine, which can also disturb our sleep
• spicy foods
• hot drinks.

If you implement these steps and you find your night sweats are no better, you may need to discuss further with your doctor. And do not forget to rehydrate with plenty of water if you are sweating a lot!
