The Lake District has officially been named the ‘world’s happiest travel destination!’ Beating popular holiday hotspots like New Zealand, Norway and Australia by a significant margin, the Lakes have come out on top as the place to be for happy tourists.

For those who live here, the recent ‘happiest destination’ title is no surprise – and the tourism figures reflect this. In 2023 alone, the Lake District received over 18 million visitors, generating a total revenue of more than £2.3 million for the region.

But just what makes this tranquil area such a tourist hotspot? Is it the stunning views, quaint, picturesque villages, mouthwatering range of restaurants or the welcoming locals? Our Sales and Marketing Manager, Leeann Lennox-Burrough, thinks it is all of this and more!

“The Lakes are truly wonderful, with endless places to explore and breathtaking views to photograph. However, the main reason I love the area so much is the exciting range of activities available.

“From museums and hiking to sports and truly unique days out, there really is something for everyone in the Lake District! Here’s my list of the best things to do to help you plan your next holiday at Armathwaite Hall.”

1.     Climb Scafell Pike

“Famous for a reason, the majestic Scafell Pike is a true hiking adventure! At 978 metres tall, scaling this incredible mountain is not for the faint-hearted and should only be attempted with the proper preparations, equipment and experience. But if you do reach the summit, the views are truly out of this world.

“If you’re a less experienced hiker, don’t worry! There are plenty more walks available throughout the Lakes, some of which are fully accessible and can even be completed with the kids in tow! Try the Portinscale Riverbank Loop route or explore the historic Castlerigg Stone Circle.”

2.     Visit the Theatre by The Lake

“If you love live performance, make sure to book in for a show at the gorgeous Theatre by The Lake. It’s located on the edge of Derwentwater and boasts a full schedule of productions, from modern comedy and beloved classics to contemporary retellings of Shakespeare.

“The theatre also often runs seasonal discounts for their shows, as well as creative workshops – perfect if you’re looking to brush up on your playwriting skills!”

3.     Go pony trekking

“One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Lake District is on horseback. From exhilarating horse riding experiences for the proficient, to calming pony trekking for complete beginners, the Lakes offer a range of ways to spend time with these wonderfully gentle creatures.

“You haven’t truly embraced the wild side of the Lake District until you’ve cantered across an open, green space or ridden through the woodland on horseback!”

4.     Embrace the World of Beatrix Potter

“Those travelling to the Lake District with little ones should definitely make time to visit the magical World of Beatrix Potter.

“Officially one of the top ten best family museums to be found in Europe, this immersive experience celebrates all things Beatrix Potter. From Peter Rabbit to Jemima Puddleduck and Mrs Tiggywinkle, you’ll be sure to leave this lovely attraction with a hop, skip and jump in your step.”

5.     Walk an alpaca

“Continuing the animal theme, another activity I recommend you try while visiting the Lakes is alpaca walking. A completely unique experience, walking alpacas always brings me such a sensation of calm and relaxation.

“Alpacas are inherently gentle creatures and their sweet expressions and soft coats never fail to lift my spirits! Plus, walking them through the Lake District countryside gives you another excuse to stop and admire the stunning surroundings.”

6.     Try Grasmere Gingerbread

“Those in the know will already be nodding their heads as I mention the delicious treat that is Grasmere Gingerbread. This chewy gingerbread is so good it’s been satisfying sweet tooths since 1854!

“Visit the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop in the sleepy village of the same name to try it for yourself. Just don’t be surprised if you end up returning to top up your supplies again and again.”

7.     Enjoy a tipple at The Lakes Distillery

“The multi-award-winning Lakes Distillery is the place to be for whisky lovers. An exclusive collection with Selfridges and a partnership with Michelin star chef Simon Rogan highlight both the luxury and skill on offer at this distillery, found near Bassenthwaite Lake.

“The Distillery Tour and Tasting Experience lets you see behind the scenes, but my personal favourite is the Whisky and Chocolate Pairing Experience! Don’t worry if whisky isn’t your thing, the brand also produces its own vodka and gin.”

8.     Take a walk to Hampsfell Hospice

“History buffs will enjoy a visit to Hampsfell Hospice. The small but important structure has been a haven of shelter for travellers since 1846.

“The Hospice is still standing, and not only can you go inside it, but you can also venture onto its roof (as long as you have a head for heights!) to enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. There’s even a helpful viewfinder set into the roof, to help you take in the best sights.”

9.     Explore Rydal Cave

“One for the more adventurous among us, the journey to Rydal Cave takes you past some truly beautiful Lake District scenery and, finally, across a set of stepping stones into the cave itself.

“The tranquil views of the surrounding fells are best viewed from the mouth of the cave, while the inside of the cave is truly atmospheric – if a little spooky at times! I would recommend keeping your visit to daylight hours during the summer, as the cave can get quite cold.”

10. Hunt for ghosts at Muncaster Castle

“Continuing with the spooky theme, my next entry is the supposedly haunted Muncaster Castle. While I’ve never been lucky (or unlucky!) enough to witness a ghost on one of my many visits here, I can’t deny that the eerie atmosphere is addictive.

“The Castle runs various events throughout the year, from owl experiences and archery lessons to axe throwing and spine-tingling ghost walks. Be prepared to be scared at Muncaster!”

11. Visit Stanley Ghyll Waterfall

“If you’ve been to the Lakes before, chances are you’ll be well acquainted with the Aira Force and High Force waterfalls – but have you been to Stanley Ghyll?

“This breathtaking waterfall is my favourite of all the falls in the area, with its own viewing platform and spectacular drop into the ravine below. With plenty of greenery surrounding the water, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of the wildlife that call the Lakes home.”

12. Walk with wolves

“Another one for the thrill-seekers, visitors to the Lake District can now go on a walk with a wolf! Your guide and expert wolf handler will take you on a walk through the beautiful countryside with these amazing creatures by your side.

“I particularly enjoyed learning about the different wolf howls and, of course, the opportunity to take some incredible photos!”

13. Swim in Buttermere Infinity Pool

“If you’re a lover of wild swimming, you absolutely have to visit the crystal-clear waters of Buttermere Infinity Pool. This magical hidden gem sits at the base of an amazing waterfall, set amongst stunning valleys and fells.

“You can see the lovely Buttermere Lake from the pool and the water remains fairly warm in the spring and summer months. I love switching my phone off and fully immersing myself in the idyllic atmosphere of this beautiful pool.”

14. Relax at Holehird Gardens

“The 2023 RHS Partner Garden regional winner, Holehird Gardens is the perfect place to relax and unwind on your trip to the Lake District – especially if you’ve been enjoying some of the more intense activities on my list!

“A 10-acre garden that dates back to the Victorian era, Holehird features wildflower meadows, woodland, a rock garden and so much more. Beautiful all year round, the garden features winter-flowering plants, such as snowdrops, and is open until the end of October.”

15. Spend a day at the Lakes Aquarium

“Perfect for families and couples alike, a day out at the Lakes Aquarium is never dull! Found on the shore of Lake Windermere, this lovely aquarium features aquatic creatures from a variety of different countries and climates.

“Make sure not to miss the seahorses, sting rays and – my personal favourites – the Asia short-clawed otter!”

16. Get historical at Stott Park Bobbin Mill

“The only remaining working bobbin mill in the region, Stott Park Bobbin Mill is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of the Lake District.

“Book a tour to see how the bobbins were crafted historically, with the original machinery on show. This is a great day out for curious kids, with an interactive tour available for families, complete with fun dress-up opportunities!”

17. Experience the Laurel and Hardy Museum

“A world-famous attraction, the Laurel and Hardy Museum is a truly unique day out. As a big fan of the comedy duo, this collection of photographs, letters and short films.

“A third-generation family business, the intriguing collection is housed within an old Roxy cinema complex. The cinema still exists today, playing hilarious clips of the duo.”

18. Take to the skies in a hot air balloon

“Experience the breathtaking landscape of the Lake District in a totally new way – from a hot air balloon! I felt a sensation of freedom and awe during my balloon journey and it’s something I recommend everyone tries at least once.

“I was able to help with inflating the balloon itself, as the dedicated team told our group some interesting facts about hot air ballooning. After the flight, we were treated to a glass of bubbly and received our flight certificates!”

19. Learn a new skill at Cumbria Crystal

“Why not try glass blowing during your time in the Lakes and finish your holiday with a new skill? At the lovely Cumbria Crystal you can work with an expert glassblower to create your very own bauble in beautiful multi-colours.

“The process itself can be quite difficult to master at first – but this just gives you a further sense of achievement. I still use my handmade bauble to decorate my Christmas tree every year!”

20. Go seal spotting

“Barrow-in-Furness is home to South Walney Nature Reserve – one of the best places to go seal spotting in the UK. In fact, it’s the only place in the North West that you can see the wonderful grey seal.

“Head over in the Autumn to be in with a chance to see some adorable seal pups, and keep up to date with their progress after your holiday with the reserve’s special live seal cam.”

21. Visit The Puzzling Place

“Enter a world of optical illusion at The Puzzling Place in Keswick. Great fun for all ages, this unique experience features an anti-gravity room, hologram gallery and more. I loved the Ames Room, which makes you look either giant or tiny, depending on where you stand.

“Capture some unbelievable photos and enjoy over 50 mind-bending exhibitions. You won’t believe your eyes!”

22. Find the Fairy Steps

“A set of natural stone steps set into a rock face in Beetham may seem unassuming, but, if you know the local legends, this location takes on a magical atmosphere.

“These steps are said to be a haunt of tiny fairy folk, who will grant your wish if you can climb the steps without touching the rocks on either side. Although I wasn’t able to accomplish the fairy challenge myself, I loved the peaceful tranquillity of this hidden gem.

“The fairy steps do have a less-than-magical historical significance, however, situated along one of the region’s ‘corpse trails.’ These routes were used to transport the coffins of those who passed in the more remote villages and hamlets to their final resting places. It’s incredible to believe coffins were really carried up and down these steep and narrow steps.”

23. Get an adrenaline rush

“If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you need to try a Via Ferrata adventure. Brace yourself for a guided ascent up Honister Crag, where you’ll make your way towards the fantastic views at the summit with a harness and cable to assist your climb.

“You can also climb an incredible sky ladder, scale the walls inside Honister Slate Mine and cross the breathtaking infinity bridge. Those who love the extreme side of life can even camp overnight in a tent suspended 500 feet above the Honister Pass – a truly exhilarating experience!”

24. Ride on a steam train

“A trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway never disappoints! This wonderful steam train takes you on a seven-mile journey through hills and across an estuary. I find the hustle and bustle of a steam train comforting and the views on this journey are some of my absolute favourites.

“Make your steam train outing extra-special with a gift experience. We enjoyed the special Directors’ Saloon Tapas Picnic Experience, which includes your own private carriage, a tapas picnic for up to four, plus a cute souvenir tote!”

25. Get out on the water

“I can’t make a list of brilliant activities in the Lake District without mentioning the wealth of water sports and boat rides available. From canoeing and kayaking to diving, sailing and water-skiing, lovers of the open water have plenty to choose from.

“One of my favourite ways to experience the various bodies of water in the Lakes is by boat. Scenic cruises depart from Lake Windermere every day and run throughout the year. Experience the Lake District with the wind in your hair and the open water stretching out ahead of you!”

So, there we have it – a fantastic list of exciting activities and experiences to try on your next holiday to the Lake District. Which ones do you want to try first?
