What makes the Lake District perfect for dogs?

The Lake District is one of the UK’s best destinations for dog-friendly holidays, with endless walking routes, open countryside and scenic lakeside trails to explore together.

From peaceful walks to challenging fell hikes, there is something to suit every type of dog and owner – whether you are travelling with an energetic adventure companion or a relaxed older dog who prefers slower strolls.

Dog walks from the hotel doorstep

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Armathwaite Hall is having beautiful walking routes right on your doorstep.

Guests can enjoy peaceful walks through the hotel grounds down towards Bassenthwaite Lake, where dogs can explore woodland paths, lakeside scenery and open countryside without needing to travel far from the hotel.

Nearby Dodd Wood is particularly popular with guests staying with dogs, offering shaded walking trails, stunning views across Bassenthwaite and routes suitable for a variety of abilities. For those looking for more challenging adventures, Skiddaw, Catbells and Helvellyn are all within easy reach.

After a long day outdoors, return to the comfort of the hotel for a relaxing evening with your dog by your side.

Dog friendly towns, cafes and pubs nearby

The surrounding Lake District area is incredibly welcoming to dogs, making it easy to enjoy days out together during your stay.

The beautiful town of Keswick, just a 15-minute drive away, is home to a range of dog-friendly cafes, pubs and independent shops, while many local attractions and walking routes welcome dogs throughout the year.

Whether you are stopping for lunch after a morning walk or exploring the local area at a slower pace, you are sure to find plenty of places where dogs are just as welcome as their owners.

Exploring the Lake District safely with your dog

The Lake District’s landscapes are beautiful year-round, but conditions can change quickly – especially on higher ground.

If you are planning longer walks or fell hikes, we recommend bringing:

  • A strong lead or harness
  • Towels for muddy paws
  • Plenty of water during warmer months
  • Additional weather protection during colder conditions.

Many nearby walking routes pass through farmland and wildlife habitats. Keeping dogs under control and on a lead where required helps protect the local environment, ensuring everyone can enjoy the countryside safely.
